Short Hills

Overview

Short Hills was established in 1874 as a planned community combining healthful, natural surroundings with easy access to the commerce and culture of New York City. The combination was, and remains, a winning one.

The appeal of this picturesque and convenient setting has helped make Short Hills, a part of Millburn Township, a place where an eclectic group of people enjoy a sustainable and sophisticated lifestyle, surrounded by nature’s greenery, fresh air, and abundant recreational and leisure opportunities.

What’s in the neighborhood?

Nestled among the green, rolling hills that gave the town its name, Short Hills is a place not of landmarks but of landscapes. Parks and trails surround its curving streets lined with handsome homes. Short Hills is the picture of the classic American upscale commuter town. The railroad station on Chatham Road dates from 1907, replacing the original built by the town’s founder, wealthy businessman Stewart Hartshorn, at his own expense.

Short Hills lies just west of the expansive South Mountain Reservation. Designed by the Olmsted brothers, it combines well-preserved woods, lakes, streams, and waterfalls with cultivated attractions such as the Regatta Playground overlooking Orange Reservoir and Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. Other green destinations nearby include Gero Park, the Reeves-Reed  Arboretum, Canoe Brook Country Club, and many public golf courses.
