Short Hills was established in 1874 as a planned community combining healthful, natural surroundings with easy access to the commerce and culture of New York City. The combination was, and remains, a winning one.

What’s in the neighborhood?
Nestled among the green, rolling hills that gave the town its name, Short Hills is a place not of landmarks but of landscapes. Parks and trails surround its curving streets lined with handsome homes. Short Hills is the picture of the classic American upscale commuter town. The railroad station on Chatham Road dates from 1907, replacing the original built by the town’s founder, wealthy businessman Stewart Hartshorn, at his own expense.
Short Hills lies just west of the expansive South Mountain Reservation. Designed by the Olmsted brothers, it combines well-preserved woods, lakes, streams, and waterfalls with cultivated attractions such as the Regatta Playground overlooking Orange Reservoir and Essex County Turtle Back Zoo. Other green destinations nearby include Gero Park, the Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Canoe Brook Country Club, and many public golf courses.

Neighboring Millburn serves as the upscale shopping and dining heart of the community, with home goods store Design Hub Home at the center of town. But the area’s big shopping draw is The Mall at Short Hills. Being so convenient to Manhattan, its upscale retailers host many celebrity-led fashion and entertainment events.
Short Hills residents have a range of grocery options within easy reach. Regional chain Kings Food Markets has a store in the Plaza at Short Hills, ShopRite has two locations nearby, and Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are represented just east of Millburn. Also in the area are Asian grocery Gold Valley Supermarket and Mia Famiglia Italian grocery store.

The Short Hills train station itself is home to two popular eateries, Boxcar Bar and Liv. But as with shopping, so it is with dining: Most of the action is a short drive from Short Hills. Upscale Northern Italian fare is easy to find, with Fiorino, La Pergola, Joey’s Tap & Tavern, La Focaccia, and Scalini Fedeli heading the list.
Huntley Taverne features modern American food and drink, Restaurant Serenade provides an innovative take on upscale French cuisine, and Carriage House offers a fine-dining experience indoors or out. Also popular are MoonShine Modern Supper Club, Millburn Standard, Scotty’s Pub and Comedy Cove, and a variety of options at and around The Mall at Short Hills.
