Overview

Jersey City

New York City’s close cousin across the Hudson River, Jersey City has a long tradition of welcoming immigrants to America—Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty are in New Jersey waters, after all. That’s helped make today’s Jersey City one of the most diverse cities in the country.

Home to thriving communities of many cultures, Jersey City offers a refreshing waterfront take on a vibrant urban environment with effortless access to all things NYC. Boutiques, bars, restaurants, public parks, and entertainment venues serve residents’ day-to-day needs as well as their desire for connecting with others.

What’s in the neighborhood?

The Statue of Liberty’s backyard is Liberty State Park, with hiking and biking trails, picnic grounds, and Liberty Science Center. Many urban parks dot the Jersey City map, including Hamilton Park, Coles Park, Van Vorst Park, Morris Canal Park, and others. The 3.2-mile Hudson River Waterfront Walkway connects Jersey City and Hoboken, delighting cyclists and pedestrians, residents and visitors with sweeping views of Manhattan.

Community service opportunities.

Engaging with the surrounding neighborhood is a cornerstone of every Veris Residential community. Jersey City makes it easy. The city government’s Serve Jersey City program’s website offers opportunities to connect with local businesses, nonprofits, and event sponsors needing volunteers in various capacities.

In a similar vein, nonprofit Jersey Cares coordinates projects that address community-identified needs, and recruits volunteers to lend a hand. The York Street Project helps families in need, particularly mothers and children. Places of worship frequently conduct food and clothing drives, and local schools are always looking for help with tutoring or counseling.
